Progress of a nation is always measured
by its health. For good health everybody should have free excess to healthy and
nutritious food. To achieve this objective; UOS has introduced the department of
Food Science and Technology. The main objective of this department is to provide
highly qualified and
experienced manpower to develop food industries according to
the international standards involving latest processing and preservation techniques.

Introduction |
|
The Department of Food Science
and Technology was established in August 2005. Classes of BS Four Year Degree in
Food Science and Technology started in Jan. 2006. The program, is being
run under semester system and has been
designed on most modern global concepts in the field
and made compatible with the job market requirements, especially our over-expanding
food industry, academia and the governmental organizations.

Department of Food Science & Technology
has latest equipment for food analysis
including amino acid analyzer, atomic absorption,
flame photo meter, spectrophotometer, freeze drier, vacuum rotary evaporator, HPLC
(high tech) in running condition.

Collaboration with industries
and other institutions |
|
The department is promoting collaboration with other national and international universities, which would be of great benefit
to our students and faculty. The department is committed to provide excellent education
to the undergraduate and graduate students. The students will avail the opportunity
to have on job training through internships in the food industry, chain restaurants,
five star hotels, catering institutions and research organizations. The curriculum
focuses on developing professional skills and entrepreneurship.

Education and Training |
|
Food professionals have at least a
bachelor's degree with a major in food science, food technology or food engineering.
An advanced degree of master's or Doctorate is required for management positions
and research. University of Sargodha has set minimum standards for undergraduate
programs of study in food science and technology. Students seeking admission in
bachelor's degree should take biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics at college
level. Besides taking physics, biology, chemistry, nutrition, mathematics and statistics,
students are required to take food chemistry, food analysis, food microbiology,
food processing operations, and food engineering. The study of economics, business
management, and marketing will be helpful for a strong career in industry. The discipline
of Food Science and Technology is being offered in Pakistan at Diploma level (DAE)
in Government Colleges of Technology (polytechnic institutes) at Faisalabad and
Sahiwal and Polytechnic in Karachi for female students. The Universities awarding
degrees at graduate and postgraduate levels are University of Sargodha, University
of Agriculture Faisalabad, University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi, Sindh Agricultural
University Tandojam, University of Karachi, NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar,
Gomal University D.I. Khan and University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Muzaffarabad
(College of Agriculture, Rawalakot). The University of Sargodha is pionier in starting
BS 4 year degree programe in Food Science & Technology. All other Universities
in the country will follow the same programe in future. The Colleges of Agriculture
in Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan only offer introductory courses in Food Technology
for B.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture. Graduates from these institutions can be found
in every part of the country and abroad in industry, in education departments or
in governmental organizations. |
